Pension
Nora stands prominently on Theotokopolou Street amidst an
extraordinary array of Venetian, Turkish and Neo-Classical
buildings that in turn reflect the depth of history and the
cultural heritage of Chania’s Old Town.
The Pension is wonderfully situated, just around the corner from the harbour, and is a grand old building that was
founded in the Venetian era but beautifully restored in
1887. It boasts marvellous high ceilings, large sunny windows
and wooden floors, and has been adorned with woven Cretan
rugs and traditional furniture. The two large balconies
offer views towards both the White Mountains and the sea
where one can relax and enjoy spectacular romantic sunsets.
The Pension is open summer and winter, therefore heating and
air-conditioning are both standard in every room, as are
private bathrooms and access to a kitchen. You can choose
from either a triple, double, twin or single style room and
ground floor studios are available. Baby cots and beds can
be added upon request free of charge.
We specialise in giving advice to enable our customers to
travel independently and economically throughout Western
Crete.
Chania’s ideal location often serves as a base for those who
like to adventure and explore the surrounding peninsulas,
mountains and gorges during the daytime but who also like to
return to the vibrant and enchanting atmosphere of the
Venetian Harbour in the evenings.
Indeed, the owner of the Pension, Eftihis, is born and bred
in Chania and speaks fluent English. Thus, his knowledge of
the district will enable you to make the most of your
holiday, discover the hidden side of natural Crete and
escape to idyllic sandy beaches.
Chania, something for everyone!
Just a
few of our many suggestions:
Meander
along the cobbled streets and back alleyways of the Old City
where jewellery makers and craftsmen ply their trade. Sip
ouzo at the harbour and watch the sunset over the lighthouse.
Discover
the Akrotiri Peninsula, just 20 minutes from Chania, and
home to two beautiful monasteries, picturesque walks and
three superb but uniquely individual beaches. Visit the site
where the movie ‘Zorba the Greek’ was filmed. Make a break
on the way at the grave of Elefterios Venizelos and see the
breathtaking view of the City and Sea of Crete.
Walk the
longest gorge in Europe, the Samaria Gorge, a stunning 18km
and a nature reserve for the Cretan Kri-kri goat. As an
alternative, trek the 8km Imbros Gorge which is one of the
narrowest and most imposing gorges on the island. No guide
necessary for either.
Explore
the Gramvousa Peninsula which has exquisite award winning
beaches and the ancient site of Falassana. We can direct you
how to drive to the soft white sands of Balos Lagoon or book
the boat trip that sails firstly to the 1597 Venetian castle
where pirates once occupied. Great for photograph
enthusiasts!
And if
you don’t want to spend too much time in the sun, visit the
very poignant Allied War Cemetery and then continue up to
the Roman archaeological site of Aptera and the Turkish
fortress. From there one can see tremendous views over Souda
Bay which is the largest natural harbour in Europe.
